Reels vs Image Posts: Which Gets More Reach for Local Businesses in India?

If you have ever posted a beautifully designed image on Instagram and gotten 40 likes, then uploaded a shaky phone video that hit 4,000 views, you already know the answer intuitively. But we wanted data. So we pulled 3 months of analytics across our managed client accounts — 14 local businesses across Surat, Ahmedabad, and Vadodara — and compared Reels performance to static image posts head to head.

The Numbers

Across all accounts, Reels averaged 6.2x more reach than static image posts in the same period. The gap was even larger for accounts with under 1,000 followers — where Reels averaged 9x more non-follower reach. In plain terms: Instagram is aggressively pushing Reels to people who don't follow you. Image posts mostly reach people who already do.

What This Means for Local Businesses

If your goal is brand awareness and new audience, Reels are non-negotiable. If your goal is engaging your existing audience — reminders, offers, testimonials — image posts still do the job efficiently and are faster to produce. The best-performing accounts in our data used both: Reels for reach, images for depth.

The Reels That Performed Best

Not all Reels are equal. The top performers shared these traits:

  • Hook in the first 2 seconds: A bold text overlay or surprising visual that stops the scroll. "We transformed this kitchen for ₹40,000" outperformed "Interior Design Services in Surat" every time.
  • 15–30 seconds duration: Shorter Reels had higher completion rates, which the algorithm rewards.
  • Local context: Mentioning Surat, Gujarat, or showing recognisable local landmarks in the background increased saves and shares significantly.
  • Trending audio: Reels using popular audio tracks consistently outperformed those with original or no audio.

What About Carousels?

Carousel posts — multiple images that users swipe through — performed 2.1x better than single image posts in our data. They are worth using for educational content ("5 Things to Know Before Filing GST"), service showcases, and before-and-after comparisons. Not a replacement for Reels, but a clear step up from single images.

The Honest Caveat

Reach is not revenue. We have seen accounts with 50,000 Reel views generate zero leads, and accounts with 800 views generate three paying clients from a single post. What matters is who sees it and what they do next. Pair your Reels with a clear call to action — WhatsApp link in bio, story CTA, or a follow-up image post with the offer — and reach becomes meaningful.

The bottom line: for local businesses starting from scratch, Reels are your fastest path to being discovered by new customers in your city. Start there.
